About GIF compression
Three levers shrink a GIF: fewer pixels (resolution), fewer colors (palette size), and fewer frames (frame rate). This tool applies all three with ffmpeg.wasm, entirely on your device.
How to compress a GIF
Upload your GIF
Drop a .gif file into the box above. Everything stays in your browser — the file is never uploaded.
Adjust the settings
Lower the width, reduce the color count, and pick a frame rate or dithering. You see the effect before you download.
Download the result
Hit compress and save the smaller GIF. Compare the original and new size, then grab the file with one click.
Why compress GIFs with VidPackit
Private and secure
All processing happens on your device with ffmpeg.wasm. Your GIF never leaves the browser, so nothing is uploaded to a server.
Free, with no limits
No account, no watermark, no file-size cap. Compress as many GIFs as you like, completely free.
Keep quality under control
Tune resolution, colors, frame rate and dithering to balance size against quality — or keep the source resolution and full palette for a near-lossless shrink that only trims redundant frames.
Fast, right in the browser
No waiting for a server round-trip. The conversion runs locally and finishes in seconds on most machines.
Frequently asked questions
Why are GIFs so large?
GIF stores every frame as a full image with a limited 256-color palette, so even short clips pack in a lot of redundant data. Fewer pixels, colors, and frames mean a smaller file.
Will compression reduce the quality?
It can, when you lower the resolution or color count — that is what shrinks the file. But you control every setting, and you can keep the original size and full palette to make the change nearly invisible.
Are my GIFs uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser with ffmpeg.wasm. Your file never leaves your device, so it stays completely private.
Have a video clip instead of a GIF? MP4 to GIF converter turns it into an animated GIF first.
Want only a short moment? trim the clip to the exact range before compressing.
