What is MOV to MP4 conversion?
MOV to MP4 conversion is the process of repackaging a QuickTime (.mov) video into the MP4 container so it plays on devices and apps that don’t understand Apple’s format. VidPackit does the whole job inside your browser: the file is read with the File API, inspected and rewritten through WebCodecs, and saved back to your own disk, so no part of it reaches a server. You drop a .mov in, pick MP4 as the output, and most files are remuxed — the video and audio tracks are copied into a new container without re-encoding, which is lossless and takes seconds. When a track uses a codec the target player can’t handle, the tool re-encodes just that track to H.264. There is no upload queue, no watermark, no sign-up and no file size cap. It is free, and it runs on desktop Chrome and Edge.
How to convert MOV to MP4
Drop in your QuickTime video
Drag a .mov onto the box above or pick one from your disk. VidPackit reads its duration, resolution, codecs and tracks, and shows you what it found.
Pick MP4 (already selected)
MP4 is the default output, so you usually just keep it. If your file holds an unusual codec, choose a quality preset and the tool will re-encode to H.264 for maximum compatibility.
Convert and download
Press convert and your browser rewrites the container locally, with a progress bar and a remaining-time estimate. Download the MP4 when it finishes. Nothing was uploaded at any point.
Why convert MOV to MP4 with VidPackit
Your files stay on your machine
Repackaging and encoding happen in the page itself. Open the Network tab of your browser dev tools before you start and you will see no video data leaving your device.
MP4 is the most compatible video format
Where MOV stalls on Windows, Android, older browsers and many chat apps, MP4 with H.264 plays almost everywhere — phones, smart TVs, editors and social platforms.
Most MOV files remux losslessly
iPhone and Mac clips are usually already H.264 or HEVC inside the .mov. Copying those tracks into an MP4 container changes nothing about the picture, so the result is bit-for-bit the same quality, just a different wrapper.
No watermark, no sign-up, no daily limit
No account, no queue and no logo baked into your video. Convert as many files as your device can handle, and there is no size cap on top of that.
MP4 is one of several outputs on the same screen
The same tool also writes WebM, MOV, MKV, M4V and MPEG-TS when you need a different container, and it extracts audio to MP3, AAC, WAV, FLAC or OGG if you only want the sound.
Supported formats and related conversions
MOV to MP4 is not just for iPhone clips. Anything your browser can decode can be fed in, and the same screen writes the other containers too.
- Video output
- MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV, M4V, MPEG-TS
- Audio output
- MP3, AAC, WAV, FLAC, OGG
- Input
- Anything your browser can decode: MOV, MP4, MKV, WebM, AVI, MPEG-TS and the usual audio files.
Want to shrink the file instead of just changing the wrapper? compress the video keeps the MP4 but cuts the size on the same engine.
Need a single still from the same clip? grab a frame captures any frame as a JPG or PNG, right in your browser.
Working with a long recording? trim it down first so you only convert the part you want.
Browsers only encode what their WebCodecs stack supports, so a format your browser can’t produce is greyed out instead of failing halfway through.
Privacy and security
Conversion happens inside the page you have open. Your video is read with the File API, repackaged or encoded by your browser through WebCodecs, and written back to your device. No copy goes to VidPackit or anywhere else.
You can check that yourself in about a minute:
- Open the Network tab in your browser dev tools, then convert a file. No request carries your video data.
- Turn off your Wi-Fi after the page has loaded. The tool keeps working, because it does not need a connection.
- Close the tab and the file is gone. Nothing is kept on a server because nothing was ever uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting MOV to MP4 lose quality?
Not when the file is remuxed. If your MOV already holds H.264 or HEVC video, VidPackit copies the tracks into the MP4 container without re-encoding, so the picture is identical to the original. Only when a track uses a codec MP4 players struggle with does the tool re-encode it — and then it targets H.264, the most widely supported option.
Why won’t my iPhone video open on Windows?
iPhones often record in HEVC inside an MOV container. Many Windows players and some chat apps decode the MOV wrapper or the HEVC codec poorly, so the file won’t open or shows a black screen. Remuxing to MP4 — or re-encoding the video to H.264 — makes it play on Windows, Android and the web.
Are my videos uploaded anywhere?
No. All the work runs in your browser with WebCodecs, so the file never leaves your device. The privacy section above lists two ways to verify that yourself.
Is there a file size limit?
We do not set one. The real ceiling is your device memory, because the whole file is processed in the browser instead of on a server. A phone or a low-memory laptop will struggle with a multi-gigabyte clip that a desktop handles fine.
