What is MP4 to MP3 conversion?
MP4 to MP3 conversion is the process of pulling the audio track out of an MP4 file and encoding it on its own as an MP3, leaving the picture behind. VidPackit does the whole job inside your browser: the file is read with the File API, decoded and encoded through WebCodecs, and written back to your own disk, so no part of it reaches a server. You drop a video in, pick MP3 as the output, and choose one of four levels. Original and high both target 100% of the source audio bitrate, medium targets 70% and low targets 50%, and the target is never set above the bitrate the track already uses. At the original level an MP3 soundtrack is copied across untouched instead of re-encoded. There is no upload queue, no watermark, no sign-up and no file size cap. It is free, and it runs on desktop Chrome and Edge.
How to convert MP4 to MP3
Drop in your video
Drag an MP4 onto the box above or pick one from your disk. VidPackit reads its duration, resolution, codecs and audio track, and shows you what it found.
Pick MP3 and a level
Choose MP3 from the audio formats, then a level. Original and high keep the source audio bitrate, medium targets 70% of it and low targets 50%; every button prints the kbps it will ask for on your file.
Encode and download
Press convert and your browser encodes the audio locally, with a progress bar and a remaining-time estimate. Download the MP3 when it finishes. Nothing was uploaded at any point.
Why extract audio from MP4 with VidPackit
Your files stay on your machine
Decoding and encoding happen in the page itself. Open the Network tab of your browser dev tools before you start and you will see no video data leaving your device.
You see the target bitrate before you commit
Each of the four levels prints the audio bitrate it will aim for on your specific file, so medium is a number in kbps rather than a guess.
The MP3 never asks for more than the source
Target bitrate is clamped to the source audio bitrate, so re-encoding cannot inflate the file. A quiet voice track comes back small instead of padded out to a fixed preset.
No watermark, no sign-up, no daily limit
No account, no queue and no logo baked into your audio. Convert as many files as your device can handle, and there is no size cap on top of that.
MP3 is one of five audio outputs
MP3, AAC, WAV, FLAC and OGG sit on the same screen, and the video containers — MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV, M4V and MPEG-TS — are there when you want the picture back.
Supported input formats and related conversions
Video to MP3 is not limited to MP4 sources. Anything your browser can decode can be fed in, and the same screen writes the other audio containers too.
- Audio output
- MP3, AAC, WAV, FLAC, OGG
- Video output
- MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV, M4V, MPEG-TS
- Input
- Anything your browser can decode: MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI, MPEG-TS and the usual audio files.
Want to keep the picture instead of the sound? compress the video shrinks MP4, WebM, MOV and MKV on the same engine.
Need a single still from the same clip? grab a frame captures any frame as a JPG or PNG, right in your browser.
Working with a long recording? trim it down first so you only pull audio from the part you want.
Browsers only encode what their WebCodecs stack supports, so a format your browser cannot produce is greyed out instead of failing halfway through.
Privacy and security
Conversion happens inside the page you have open. Your video is read with the File API, decoded and encoded by your browser through WebCodecs, and written back to your device. No copy goes to VidPackit or anywhere else.
You can check that yourself in about a minute:
- Open the Network tab in your browser dev tools, then convert a file. No request carries your video or audio data.
- Turn off your Wi-Fi after the page has loaded. The tool keeps working, because it does not need a connection.
- Close the tab and the file is gone. Nothing is kept on a server because nothing was ever uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
Is the MP4 to MP3 converter free?
Yes. No account, no payment step, no daily limit and no watermark on the MP3. Convert as many files as your device can handle.
Are my videos uploaded anywhere?
No. Encoding runs in your browser with WebCodecs, so the file never leaves your device. The privacy section above lists two ways to verify that yourself.
What quality will the MP3 be?
Original and high both target 100% of the source audio bitrate, medium targets 70% and low targets 50%. Each level prints the kbps it will aim for before you start, and the target is never set above the bitrate your track already uses. The one exception is the encoder floor: below 32 kbps the MP3 encoder refuses to go lower, so an unusually quiet track is raised to that instead.
Can I convert MOV, MKV or WebM to MP3?
Yes, as long as your browser can decode the file. MP4 is only the common case. The tool reads whatever container Chrome and Edge can open and writes the audio out as MP3, AAC, WAV, FLAC or OGG.
Is there a file size limit?
We do not set one. The real ceiling is your device memory, because the whole file is processed in the browser instead of on a server. A phone or a low-memory laptop will struggle with a multi-gigabyte clip that a desktop handles fine.
Which browsers work?
Desktop Chrome and Edge. They ship the complete WebCodecs support this kind of in-browser encoding needs. Other browsers show a warning above the tool, and formats they cannot encode are greyed out.
